Article | The Shaking Earth Something Want To Say Us | Dr (Ms) Sharad Singh | Central Chronicle

⛳Friends ! Today my article "The Shaking Earth Something Want To Say Us" has been published in the Sunday edition of #CentralChronicle. Please read it.

Earth is the basis of our life. That is why we call the earth as mother. If the children are deteriorating, going on the wrong path, then the mother first tries to convince them. For not paying heed to the advice of the mother, she scolds the children and sometimes even beats them because she wants the best for her children. If the depth is considered, then the increase in the incidence of earthquakes is also a similar case. Our mother earth is warning us to stop playing with the land we are living on.

More than a thousand people died and more than 100 homes were reduced to rubble due to a terrible earthquake in Afghanistan. The magnitude of the earthquake was reported as 6.1 magnitudes. The US Geological Survey (USGS) said a 6.1-magnitude earthquake shook parts of densely populated Afghanistan and Pakistan in the early hours of June 22. According to the USGS, the quake occurred at a depth of 51 km, about 44 km (27 mi) from the city of Khost in southeastern Afghanistan. The figures of huge casualties were getting started in the initial news itself. Prior to this, in 2015 earthquakes killed more than 380 people in Pakistan and Afghanistan. Then there was a 7.5-magnitude earthquake in both the countries, in which a large number of deaths occurred in Pakistan. A 5.6 magnitude earthquake struck Afghanistan's western province of Badghis on January 17-18, 2022 as well, in which many people died and dozens were injured. During this time, the US Geological Survey had informed that a 5.6-magnitude earthquake had occurred 40 km east of Kala-e-Nav, the capital of Badghis province bordering Turkmenistan. The epicenter of the earthquake, with a depth of 10.0 km at that time, was initially determined at 34.9479 degrees north latitude and 63.5686 degrees east longitude. Several aftershocks were also felt in the area after the earthquake. At that time, the epicenter of the 5.6-magnitude earthquake was in the Afghanistan-Tajikistan border region at a depth of 100 km. The tremors were felt in several cities of Khyber- Pakhtunkhwa including Peshawar, Manshera, Balakot and Charsada.

Earlier this year, on January 6, 2022, the tremors of an earthquake in Ramnagari Ayodhya in India at 12.00 am scared people. The magnitude of this tremor was given as 4.3 on the Richter scale. It was fortunate that there was no loss of life or property in it. However, people were scared by the tremors and came out of the houses late at night. Many parts of the country including Delhi-NCR were shaken by the tremors of the earthquake in India on February 1, 2022. The tremors of the earthquake were felt all over North India. People in Delhi, NCR felt the tremor in the earth for about 15.20 seconds. At the same time, tremors of earthquake were felt in other states of North India including Jammu and Kashmir. Even at that time the epicenter of the earthquake was in the Hindu Kush of Afghanistan. The magnitude of the earthquake was 5.9. It was felt in many large areas of Pakistan and Afghanistan including Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir.
Earthquake tremors were felt in Andaman Sea on 6th May 2022 at 2:21 pm today. According to the National Center for Seismology, the magnitude of the earthquake was 4.6 on the Richter scale. Earthquake reports often come from Andaman and Nicobar. Even before this, earthquake tremors were felt in Andaman and Nicobar last month. The magnitude of the earthquake was measured at 4.3 on the Richter scale. The archipelago comes in a very sensitive area from the point of view of earthquakes. Earthquake tremors are felt repeatedly here. In the month of April also, earthquake tremors were felt several times in Andaman and Nicobar.

But the recent earthquake in Afghanistan caused great devastation. There was an earthquake of 6.1 magnitudes. After this, there was only ruin and destruction all around. The global community expressed grief over the loss of life and property caused by the earthquake in Afghanistan. In the same sequence, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed grief and said on Wednesday that India is ready to provide all possible disaster relief material at the earliest. He said that India stands with the people of Afghanistan. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres also expressed grief over the painful deaths caused by the devastating earthquake in Afghanistan. He called on the international community to show solidarity in helping families in distress.

Why does an earthquake happen? According to geology, the whole earth is situated on 12 tectonic plates. The energy released when these plates collide is called an earthquake. Actually, these plates present under the earth keep rotating at a very slow speed. Every year 4-5 mm slips from its place. During this, if a plate slips from under someone, then someone gets away. During this, when the plates collide, an earthquake occurs. Below the surface of the Earth, the place where rocks break or collide is called the epicenter or hypocenter or focus. From this place the energy of the earthquake is decided in the form of vibrations in the form of waves. This vibration is exactly like the waves produced by throwing pebbles in a calm pond. In the language of science, the place where the line connecting the center of the earth to the center of the earthquake cuts the surface of the earth, is called the epicenter of the earthquake. According to the established rules, this place on the surface of the earth is closest to the epicenter of the earthquake. The rocks present under the earth are in a state of pressure and when the pressure exceeds a limit, the rocks suddenly break. Due to this the energy existing for years gets released. Rocks break parallel to a weak surface and these rocks are also called faults.
Is the increasing number of earthquakes a warning for us? Earth shaking with earthquake tremors want to tell us something? Actually the land which we consider to be solid is not solid. She is floating on liquid lava. When floating objects become unbalanced, they will collide with each other. We have played with the earth a lot and continue to do so. Some big dams are built and some skyscrapers. Not only this, but we keep on giving shocks to the earth on which we are living by doing nuclear tests on it. The carelessness of us humans has made a hole in the ozone layer and has started increasing the temperature of the earth. In such a situation, if the movement inside the earth increases, then it should not be a surprise. There is still time that we understand these small and big tremors of earthquakes and stop tampering with the elements of the earth, only then we will be able to prevent any major accident.
