Our Stray Animals, Environment and Our Concern

*We respect animals. They consider cow as their mother. We cannot tolerate that anyone should hurt the mother cow even a little bit. When we see dogs roaming on the street, we feel pity for them. When a cow dies after being hit by a vehicle, we feel sorry for its merciless death. We have tender feelings for animals, but why do these feelings often remain dormant? Have you ever thought? Stray animals do not roam on foreign roads but the roads of our country are always equipped with stray animals. Ever wondered where these stray animals come from and what are they and what effect do they have on the environment? You can see the reflection of your city in the mirror of this article of mine.*

My city of Sagar (M.P.)is one of the many Indian cities that are plagued by the problem of stray animals on a daily basis. Yes, the process of dairy displacement has already started in Sagar like other cities. It is another matter that two to three decades have already passed for this process to be implemented. However, the issue is not about dairy animals. They were even taken out for excursions from the dairy, so they had a fixed time. The issue is of those stray cows and dogs that live on the streets. Let us assume that dogs have been roaming our country for generations. Then, ever since Honorable Maneka Gandhi ji got this law made that stray dogs should not be killed by giving them poison pills, since then their number increased substantially. I myself am against animal killing. Killing any animal by poisoning it is not a humane option. For this, this provision was promoted that stray dogs should be sterilised. But what is the issue that there are many good provisions in our country but there are many loopholes in their implementation. Due to these bags, dogs are still roaming in villages and cities in large numbers and stray cattle are living their misfortune.
Take the Vedas and Puranas and see that our cow descendants have never been stray. They used to be either in the hermitages of cattle rearers or in the hermitages of sages and sages. Cow donation was especially considered an act of virtue among the cow descendants. It is clearly said in Rigveda that cow slaughter is a great sin and it is like killing a human being.
Hey Goha Nriha Vadho Wo Astu (Rigveda 7/56/17)

According to “Skanda Purana”, “Cow is the supreme god and Vedas are supreme.” Whereas in “Shrimad Bhagavad Gita”, Lord Krishna has called himself Kamdhenu – “Dhenunamasmi Kamdhenu” which means I am Kamdhenu among cows. It is also believed in the Vedas that - "Gavo Vishwasya Matarah." That means cow is the mother of the world.

According to Rigveda 6/48/13, cow directly gives only milk, but indirectly also gives food to the world through organic agriculture. The first mantra of Rigveda 1/29 says that even a person with little knowledge that is, without intelligence and without means, acquires thousands of types of real knowledge by following the cow dynasty, becomes hardworking and then becomes successful and opulent. That's why we always gave respect to the cow dynasty. Even today many people will be seen who, while falling in front of mother cow or passing by her, give her respect by touching her forehead. But have you ever thought that where did the sentiment go in which there was a practice of rearing cows with respect by keeping them in cattle sheds. Today many such cows are seen on the roads, which have stopped giving milk, that is, they have become useless for the cattle rearers. Many such bulls are seen which are left to die on the streets due to no use. They hurt others and get hurt selves. We selfish humans are responsible for their condition, that is, we do not care about those who are not of our use.
Many stray cows reach the door of our house. We give them two breads or leftover food with the intention of earning merit. Can such a huge body of his survive on that two breads or leftover food? We have made our mother cow a beggar. They stand at our door to beg for two breads. It is bitter to say, hear or write but this is the truth. Road accidents keep happening every day due to the cowherds sitting on the roads or fighting among themselves. At that time we curse the cow dynasty while forgetting to curse those who are responsible for the cow dynasty being on the streets like this.

I remember hearing about Kanjihouse (congee house, astray cattle house) from my mother in my childhood. She used to tell that Kanjihouse is the place where stray animals are caught and locked up. There they were given food and drink and full care was taken of them. In the evening, pet owners used to reach Kanjihouse looking for their animals. This would reveal their real owner and along with reprimanding those owners, they would also be fined. Now I don't even hear the word "kanjihouse".

Despite all our rules, laws and sensibilities, stray animals are wandering on the roads. Shouldn't we learn how to deal with the problem of stray animals in foreign countries with which we compare the roads of our country? Stray animals are not seen on the streets of America because it is a crime to leave animals as stray there and there is a severe punishment for this. There, it is also a crime to spread filth while taking pets out. The person who does this has to pay a fine, otherwise he has to serve the jail term. We have not shown interest in becoming like them in this matter. Early in the morning, well-to-do elite, well-educated people are seen making their precious dogs of good breed defecate here and there. Is this a sign of citizenship? Or don't play with the lives of your pet dogs, for whom on the one hand they keep everything hygienic but take them to dirty places for potty. At the same time, they also increase the risk to human health. Why would such people worry about stray animals?

Most of us are those who have no knowledge of the Stray Animals Act. Neither any serious information is given in this regard by the government nor any strictness is exercised. There is also a dearth of safe shelters for stray animals. Kanjihouse is almost finished. No formal training is given to the employees of Municipal Corporation or Municipality to catch stray animals, so when on duty, they risk their lives and work as they like. No matter how much we sing about smart cities or beautification of cities, but until we do not solve the problem of stray animals, all the progress will be like patting our backs. Stray animals driven by us are polluting, destroying our environment and we are watching silently because we are the ones responsible for this.
